You have a desk that needs filling. Maybe it is accounts payable, maybe track and trace, maybe a pricing analyst who can turn quotes around before lunch. You posted the role locally, interviewed for weeks, and the shortlist is still thin. Then someone on your leadership team asks, “Why not hire in Colombia?”
The next question in the room is the one that matters: will the work be as good? That is the right question. A cheaper seat that creates rework, missed cutoffs or a revolving door is not a saving. It is a new problem with a different invoice.
This post covers why companies hire in Colombia, what Bogotá offers in particular, and what has to be true about your hiring model for quality to hold after the first month.
The real question is not where. It is who owns the hire.
When you hire outside your own market, three things decide whether the seat works. The depth of the talent pool for that role. How much of your working day the person shares with your team. And who is responsible for that person after they start: training, performance, IT, payroll and compliance.
Location answers the first two. The model you choose answers the third. Most of the trouble companies run into abroad comes from the third one.
Why hire in Colombia: what Bogotá brings to your desk
A deep pool of educated professionals
Colombia’s higher education system enrolled 2,553,560 students in 2024, according to Ministry of Education figures from the national SNIES system. A lot of the country’s business services work sits in the capital. A study by Invest in Bogotá and Michael Page, published by the Bogotá city government, found that Bogotá hosts 70% of Colombia’s global business services operations and that more than 80,000 professionals graduate each year in fields relevant to the sector.
For your desk, that means you are not hoping one candidate happens to fit. You are choosing between people who already know how an AR aging report, a commercial invoice or a rate sheet works.
A services market that is not new
The same Invest in Bogotá and Michael Page study reported that 63% of the service centers operating in Colombia have been running for more than five years. Your new hire is joining a professional market where process documentation, KPIs and North American clients are part of normal work, not an experiment.
Your clock, all year
Bogotá runs on UTC-5 all year and has not changed its clocks since 1993, per timeanddate.com’s Bogotá time zone history. Here is the arithmetic for your team:
- Winter (U.S. on standard time): 9:00 a.m. in New York is 9:00 a.m. in Bogotá. Chicago is one hour behind Bogotá.
- Summer (U.S. on daylight time): Bogotá matches Chicago and runs one hour behind New York.
- West Coast: Bogotá is three hours ahead of Los Angeles in winter and two hours ahead in summer.
In every case, your Colombian professional shares a full business day with your team. Questions get answered the same morning, not the next one. We break down what a mismatch really costs in the real cost of working across time zones.
Working English that is tested, not assumed
English matters, but a self-reported level does not tell you much. TCA checks English through the interview and a role-specific work test, so you see how a candidate writes a customer email or reads a shipping document before you decide. We cover what working fluency looks like on the job in our guide to hiring bilingual staff.
A long-standing commercial relationship
The United States and Colombia have had a trade promotion agreement in force since May 15, 2012, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. For a company already shipping or selling between the two markets, Colombia is not an unfamiliar place to build part of a team.
Managed staffing vs. an Employer of Record
If you search for how to hire in Colombia, much of what you will find is about Employer of Record (EOR) platforms. They solve a real problem, but a different one.
An EOR platform becomes the legal employer on paper for someone you have already found. It handles the employment contract, payroll and local filings. Finding the person, testing them, setting up their computer and phone, training them and managing their performance usually stays with you. That can work if you already have the candidate and a manager with time to spare.
Managed staffing works differently. TCA handles sourcing, screening, hiring, IT setup and integration, training, payroll, compliance with Colombian labor law and ongoing performance management. You define the role, interview the finalists and make the hiring decision. Your manager directs the work. TCA keeps the rest of the seat running.
EOR vs. managed staffing
Who does the work when you hire in Colombia?
An employer of record handles the contract and payroll. Most of the rest stays on your desk. Here is how the work splits with TCA managed staffing. Tap any row for details.
| Task | Typical EOR platform | TCA managed staffing |
|---|
Compliance is not a one-time task. Colombian labor rules change: the final step of Law 2101 of 2021 brought the maximum workweek down to 42 hours in July 2026, as Vanguardia reported. With a managed model, tracking changes like that and applying them to schedules and payroll is TCA’s job, not a line on your manager’s to-do list.
How quality is protected before day one
Quality starts with who gets in front of you. Every TCA candidate completes a behavioral and cognitive assessment before you see a profile, and Predictive Index results come with each profile. Then TCA runs a documented four-week process:
- Week 1, Discover. You share your needs and complete the New Customer Package.
- Week 2, Define. Together we define the role, the tasks and what good looks like.
- Week 3, Select. You see at least two candidates with full profiles and Predictive Index results. You interview and you decide.
- Week 4, Launch. A 30/60/90-day plan, an IT integration meeting with a virtual desktop and U.S. phone line, and training begins.
That is the process, not a promise about every role. Some seats take longer to get right, and it is better to wait a week than to start the wrong person. If you are weighing whether to wait at all, see what an open logistics role is really costing you.
The IT step is where many teams feel the difference. As Robert Hempel of a U.S. firm in Colorado put it:
“TCA took a tremendous amount of stress and work off our team through their diligent sourcing and recruitment procedures. It was also tremendously helpful having them set up the phone and computer systems, as our IT department was buried at the time.”
How quality holds after day one
Most offshore and remote hiring goes wrong in month three, not week one. The person is working, nobody is checking in, and small mistakes become habits. A managed model builds the check-ins in.
- 30, 60 and 90-day check-ins, then quarterly performance reviews.
- TCA training plus a company-specific onboarding built with you, so your processes are taught the way your team runs them.
- In-house training and wellbeing programs, with a sick leave KPI under 0.9%.
- A one-year minimum contract, which gives the person time to learn your accounts and gives you a stable seat.
Your data matters too. TCA uses DLP, EDR, SIEM, 24/7 monitoring, MFA and least-privilege access, aligned with ISO/IEC 27001:2022, ISO/IEC 27002:2022, CIS Controls v8.1 and Colombian data protection rules under Statutory Law 1581 of 2012. You can read more on how TCA protects your data.
What about cost?
Cost is usually part of why companies look at Colombia, and it should be part of the conversation. [NEEDS DATA: approved savings range]. But price per seat is the wrong first number. A seat that needs its work checked and redone is not cheap, as we explain in the hidden cost of working English in the back office. Start with the quality you need, then look at what it costs to get it reliably.
Why nearshore, and why Bogotá
If you are still deciding between building part of your team nearby or further away, start with our comparison of nearshore vs. offshore staffing. It walks through time zone overlap, oversight and the kinds of roles each model suits.
TCA (The Colombian Advantage) was founded in 2017 and has offices in Greensboro, North Carolina and Bogotá. We place highly educated, bilingual Colombian professionals with U.S. and Canadian companies in transportation and logistics, supply chain, financial services, insurance, property management, medical and technology.
Start with one seat
You do not need a ten-person plan to find out whether hiring in Colombia works for you. Pick one role with clear tasks and a clear measure of good work. That could be a pricing or documentation seat on your logistics and freight team, an AP or AR role in accounting, or a coordinator in business operations. Define it with us, interview the finalists, and judge the results yourself.
